I do not own any of the characters from the game, although I do claim ownership of my own characters, as well as any personality and/or appearance changes I have given the (very few) surviving game characters. I am not responsible for any Shorting deaths induced by this fanfic. Enjoy ^_^

GALERIANS
A F T E R M A T H

Chapter 9: Blurry

*Everything's so blurry, and everyone's so fake,
and everybody's empty, and everything is so messed up…*

Lilia stared vacantly out toward the Galerian tower. The night was cold, and she was standing atop the broken-down rebel hideout. "Everything's so fucked up now…" she muttered to herself. Cain's attempted friendship was just a lie, just a way of using her. For a worthy cause, yes, but still… she didn't want to assist Cain in his death in any way.

*Pre-occupied without you, I cannot live at all,
My whole world surrounds you, I stumble then I crawl…*

Damn Cain, DAMN him for leading her on to believe what she did. She thought that after the mission, she'd finally be able to befriend Cain, maybe even hail the beginning of something more. She wanted to be with him… she still did, even though she knew it couldn't happen now. Not now, because of his determination for the mission… his determination to die.

*You could be my someone, you could be my scene,
you know that I'll protect you from all of the obscene…*

He may have protected her with his life, but that didn't matter to her anymore… she might as well be dead, since she had no real reason to live. She'd never once felt as close to anyone as she did with him, even though the compassion apparently only went one-way with him.

*I wonder what you're doing, I wonder where you are,
there's oceans in between us, but that's not very far…*

"Cain-!" she said, as she swung around to meet his gaze. He'd walked up the stairs after her, he'd followed her to the top of the building. :Damn you,: she mind-spoke to him.

*Can you take it all away, can you take it all away,
well ya shoved it in my face, this pain you gave to me…*

:Yes… damn me.:

*Can you take it all away, can you take it all away,
well ya shoved it in my face…*

The two just stood there, yards away from each other, staring at one another. He looked to her with caring eyes; she glared back at him coldly. He couldn't win her over with mere sympathy tricks. He'd deceived her, tore her apart from within. No way she'd forgive him so quickly. She swiftly turned her back to him, looking back out to the cityscape.

*Everyone is changing, there's no one left that's real,
to make up your own ending, and let me know just how you feel…*

"Cain… you don't have to go… there has to be some other way…"

He just looked back at her, his view slowly sinking to the floor.

"Cain… I won't let you go!!"

"There is no other way, Lilia… I don't have a choice. I'm the only one who can activate the virus. I have to die."

*Cause I am lost without you, I cannot live at all…*

"Cain…… no…"

"YES, Lilia… don't be so selfish. You'd rather have me all to yourself? That would mean the end of humanity, and you know it," he harshly replied. It hurt with a rasp bitter like the night wind, but deep down, she knew it to be true.

*My whole world surrounds you, I stumble then I crawl…*

She felt a bit light headed, before she fell back, half-conscious. She would've fallen to the cold concrete below. She would have, if not for Cain's timely catch. She came to a moment later, as her whole body quivered. She didn't want the Galerian to hold her as he was… and yet she did. Torn between her emotions. Love and hate, understanding and selfishness… it swirled around in her weakened mind like a hurricane, with no eye of safety.

*You could be my someone, you could be my scene,
you know that I will save you from all of the unclean…*

"Cain… I want you…" she muttered softly, barely conscious of what she was saying. Barely awake, her deepest thought escaped from her lips.

"Lilia… I want to be with you too…" he responded, holding her up. She helplessly leaned back into his gentle clutch, looking up to his eyes. She hardly ever got a chance to be so close to him, to look into those beautiful greenish gems of his.

*I wonder what you're doing, I wonder where you are,
There's oceans in between us, but that's not very far…*

"Cain…" she managed, as she weakly reached her hand up to feel his pale face. That smooth, ghostly skin of his, contrasted by the tan of his scar.

"…Lilia…" he said softly, as he reached with his one free arm to stroke hers in return. He took his chance. He made his move, and she welcomed his lips to hers. The moment he did so, all of Lilia's fears… all her anger, her hate, her doubt, even that of which she directed toward the Galerian holding her… it all faded away. She was beginning to accept it, that things would have to happen the way he had told her… but she tried not to think about any of it now. She quickly learned, as Cain's tongue danced around hers.

*Can you take it all away, can you take it all away,
well ya shoved it in my face, this pain you gave to me…*

:My Cain…: she mind-spoke to him.

:My Lilia.:

So he wanted it too. Someone to love, someone to be with.

:Cain… why?:

He could feel her thoughts, her wondering why he was always so cold to her.

:I've been hiding my feelings for you all this time… I just… I don't want you to feel hurt… when I die…:

:Cain… please, I want to be with you… I don't want to be alone anymore… I'm sad that you have to go soon… just… please, stay with me…:

:I will… I promise.:

Their passion grew, as his tongue found its way to the back of her throat. For the first time in his life, he felt it… Trust. He felt like he could trust Lilia with everything. So what if he wouldn't be around for much longer. At the very least, it would take the rebel spies a week to gather enough information for the Northern Faction to launch their final attack. Until then, Cain would finally have a chance to truly live.

*Can you take it all away, can you take it all away,
well ya shoved it in my face, this pain you gave to me…*

Gradually, the two let up, as they slowly opened their eyes. They couldn't think of what to say… for Lilia, it was her first time, her first kiss. For Cain, it felt the same, somewhat. The first time he'd kissed a woman he could trust. He looked into her eyes, as she returned his gaze.

*Nobody told me what you thought, nobody told me what to say,
everyone showed you where to turn, told you where to run away…*

She managed to gain her own footing, before standing on her own, still in Cain's embrace. :Cain?:

:Lilia?:

*Nobody told you where to hide, nobody told you what to say,
everyone showed you where to turn, showed you where to run away…*

She finally felt a bond with the Galerian. She trusted him now, she felt like she could rely on him for anything… to protect her, as he did the night he rescued her. She could feel his thoughts… so he had protected her out of his own feelings for her after all, not just because she was "vital." Then, it came.

"Cain… I love you," she said, letting her heart do the speaking.

"I love you too, Lilia…"

She had finally found the caring being within him. He was no longer afraid to get close to her. The two joined in a deep, lasting kiss, the first snowfall of winter descending above the city of Michelangelo.

*Take it all away,
explain again to me…*
